Video Games Live! 9-20-08
Video Games Live

I attended Video Games Live this past Saturday on the campus of CW POST in Nassau, Long Island. This was VGL’s first performance on Long Island and my first time seeing them and I was blown away. This is truly something every gamer or music lover in general should go see.

I had arrived early to find out what time you had to sign up for the costume contest. Then I went and changed into my Link cosplay. I met a few other contestants who were cosplaying as Captain Falcon and Sonic. We went outside and took a bunch of pics for people who were really excited to see people dressed up and we did a lil ‘Brawl Skit’ that was pretty nifty then we did another shorter skit that I think came out better and was hilarious. Then we were spotted by MTV2 and were interviewed for their Gamers Week and they asked us to do the mini skit again so that they could tape it so we did. That will air on MTV2’s Gamers Week in November. Posed for a bunch of more pictures and then ran off for the start of the costume contest.

Costume Contest:
There I met Cystal who was cosplaying as Jill Valentine and looked great. (I coincidentally saw her again the next day at the NY Renaissance Faire upstate so we spoke for a bit again). And she had the sweetest tattoo on her back inspired by video games. It was from about mid-back to shoulders. At the bottom was a classic Nintendo controller and then above it a whole collection of characters including; Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, Link, Sonic, Jill Valentine, Yoshi and some others. It looked great! Some of the characters in the costume contest were; Link (Me), Captain Falcon, Jill Valentine, Sonic, Mini-Darth Vader, Dr. Mario, Organization 13 member, Sora, and some others. We were brought back stage and waited till everything was ready to go so we all just hung out and spoke. We were finally brought on stage and the crowd was pumped. It was awesome being on stage with the orchestra behind us and all. The MC of the costume contest had the 4 pre-judged characters to step forward that the crowd would vote upon that included Sonic, Captain Falcon, Jill Valentine, and myself as Link. He announced us one at a time and the crowd cheered. Then he had a guy stand behind each of us and put his hand over us as we were announced and the crowd cheered for their favorite. I was the first up and thrust my sword into the air as I was announced (how could I not? Lol) and the crowd went nuts. I was seriously surprised and blew away but it was such an ego stroke. And not even in a cocky way but just to know that the crowd really enjoyed what you had put together, it was exciting. Next was Jill who got some cheers but not as much as she deserved. She then showed the Nintendo tattoo on her back and got a few more cheers. It was funny because I had told her if she did that she’d get louder cheers and it was true. Lol. Then Captain Falcon and Sonic. They brought forward the top two who was myself and Captain Falcon. Then had the crowd cheer and vote between the two of us. I was announced and again thrust my sword into the air and then did a sword slash as the crowd erupted for me. Again, huge ego stroke. Felt really nice. Then Captain Falcon was announced and got a very loud cheer as well. Then I was announced as the winner!!! It was incredible. 1st place in the Video Games Live Costume Contest! As I was walking off stage I was given my prize bag that included; a VGL hat and t-shirt, a Clamp manga w/ collectible Clamp chess pieces, the Halo soundtrack, a DreamAuthentics Atari package that has an Atari CD-ROM that contains 80 classic Atari games and an Atari Anniversary Edition (not sure how many games on that one yet), and a VGL Overclocked Remix that has 500+ Video Game Music Remixes (Seriously!) and some extra stuff from Final Fantasy VII on the same disk. This experience was phenomenal and it just felt so good to win it.

The Concert:
As a gamer and as someone who has played the trumpet for about 14 years and has played in symphonies this concert simply blew me away. I was completely stunned and so amazed at the shear quality and enjoyment of this show. The Concert Pops Long Island Orchestra was amazing. Between the music being played and the video clips from the games that they chose and then with the lightshow the experience was so much fun. This concert was such a win and I highly recommend seeing VGL to every single person that reads this. I was sitting there watching the performance like an excited lil kid. I LOVED IT!!!

Afterwards I took some more photos for people and purchased the VGL Volume 1 CD. Also got a photo with the VGL Master Chief costumer. I was able to get the CD Cover signed by Jack Wall (Co-Creator, Conductor, Composer/Producer on many big games), Tommy Tallarico (Co-Creator, VGL Host, one of the most successful video game composers ever), Martin Leung (Video Game Pianist), Cindy Shapiro (Vocals), and her and Jack Wall's daughter (Vocals). Then got a picture with both Jack and Tommy. Sweeet.

They played compositions from:
-Classic Arcade Medley featuring over 20+ games: Pong, Donkey Kong, Dragon's Lair, Tetris, Frogger, Ghosts 'n Goblins, Gauntlet, Space Invaders, Outrun and MANY MORE!
-Metal Gear Solid
-Kingdom Hearts
-World of Warcraft
-Civilization IV
-The Legend of Zelda
-Super Mario Brothers
-Final Fantasy VII
-Starcraft II
-Guitar Hero (Sweet Emotion by Aerosmith: contest)
-Martin Leung (aka: The Video Game Pianist) performing classic Tetris, Mario Brothers (blind-folded as well), his own personal Final Fantasy composition and crowd requests.
-Space Invaders (contest)
*I might have missed 1 or 2 but I’ll add them if I remember them.

I cant explain how EXCITED I was when they started to play The Legend of Zelda! Not to mention MYST, Castlevania, and Metroid!

I'll be posting all the pics and vids shortly.

Yikes, thought that I put that. ha. December 27th 2pm and 8pm in Newark, NJ. I believe those were the times. you can check the tour dates at their site: videogameslive.com . I went alone to this one so if people wanted to go I'd be up for seeing it again. I loved it. And they'll most likely play different sets of music.
